WELCOME TO AVON

Originally a part of Farmington, Avon was settled in 1645. In 1828 when the Farmington Canal opened, Avon began to expand rapidly as industrial and commercial growth began to draw those seeking employment. Currently, the town is home to roughly 19,000 residents. Avon is home to several educational institutions including Avon Old Farms School, a preparatory all boys boarding school, The Farmington Valley Academy Montessori, Talcott Mountain Academy of Science Mathematics and Avon High School. Residents enjoy hiking Talcott Mountain and picking fresh produce at The Pickin’ Patch.
 
Avon is home to 1st Company Governor’s Horse Guards, chartered in 1788 as the Governor’s Independent Volunteer Troop of Horse Guards. Through the late 1800s and early 1900s the Horse Guard served as a dignified escort to many presidents, governors, military heroes and dignitaries including George Washington, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, Commodore Thomas McDonough and Lafayette.
 
Riverdale Farms Shopping and Avon Village Marketplace hosts many of Avon’s businesses, restaurants and shops. Avon has a vast array of cuisine ranging from Thai to Italian, Indian to Mexican and anywhere in between.
 
For the outdoorsman there are plenty of state parks to choose from for picnics, walking paths or day hikes including Penwood State Park, Talcott Mountain State Park and Horse Guard State Park as well as Rails-to-Trails.
